Contrary to what happens in Brazil and the United Kingdom, where goods and cargo are frequently assaulted, in Portugal the situation is not so worrying (for now). In any case, and as the people say here, "It's better to prevent than to remedy," and that's what we're talking about today.
Cargo and freight theft is a constant risk for all transportation and distribution companies, regardless of their occupation area (Local, Regional, National or International). It is therefore a situation, which daily worries the FLEET MANAGERS, which in the light of the above, define and implement effective measures to prevent robberies. Therefore, we have selected 8 KEY TIPS to help AVOID the THEFT of goods and cargo. See below what our tips!
HOW TO AVOID GOOD AND CARGO THEFT?
#1 CHOOSE DAYS TIME TO CARRY OUT TRANSPORTATION
Depending on the location of the driver, most thefts occur overnight, so whenever is possible you should carry goods during the day in built-up areas. But if it is not possible to do so during daytime hours, drivers must train trains and maintain communication between themselves and the company.
#2 KNOW PREVIOUSLY THE ROUTE DETAILS TO BE PERFORMED
Drivers should not stop in unfamiliar places, regardless of their purpose (rest, meals, etc.). It is important that they know the parking lots, service stations and locations most susceptible to theft, so that they can avoid them. Drivers should never remain inside the vehicle when parked for no apparent reason and should not open the door or window, to strangers, vendors and beggars.
#3 MAKE DIFFERENT ROUTES
Routine habits are easily identified by burglars, so alternate routes must be made to deliver the same cargo or merchandise. As well, you should avoid the same dates and times.
#4 USE A RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Any and all transportation and distribution companies must have a unique Risk Management Program. Through this, the drivers use a methodology that aims to prevent, reduce and monitor the risks associated with the activities performed. It holds information such as: places of robberies occurrence (eg. areas with low illumination or traffic, ATMs, access roads to homes with little movement), characteristics and value of goods or cargo, among others.
#5 INVEST IN AUTOMATISMS
Nowadays there are already numerous options (APPs, GPS and software’s) of control of the satellite fleet, that present data on the location, kilometers traveled, rest time, anomaly with the goods or cargo, among others.
#6 GUARANTEES DRIVERS TRAINING
All drivers and company employees who are involved in the transportation and distribution of goods and cargo should be trained in the preventive measures to be taken in the event of a threat or theft.
Training topics: road hazards, dialogue with strangers about cargo or merchandise, observation of vehicles (cars, motorbikes and trucks in suspicion), communication to the competent authorities about suspicions.
#7 IF NECESSARY REQUEST AN ARMED ESCORT
Whenever the goods and cargo transported, so require, drivers can and should be armed escorted to ensure their safety and the product they carry.
#8 PROTECT YOUR VEHICLES
Safety devices, alarms and visible locks (lock, pedal cane or steering wheel) are some of the best options available on the market!
